Use a DSLR for sports action. Sports action requires a high-quality camera. A DSLR allows you to shoot good quality pictures in low lights if you set a high ISO. This camera also allows you attach telephoto lens which is essential for most sports events.
Use a long lens with the camera. At most places, you won’t be able to get close to the action. You will need a telephoto lens of 200 mm or higher to cover the entire field and get good pictures. This is necessary when you are thinking how to photograph sports.
Position yourself as close as possible to the action. If you can get into the photographers or the press area it is best. Or else you need to sit as close to the action as possible.
No sports photography is complete without capturing the players’ emotions. Get the players faces as much as possible. Seeing those emotions connects your audience with the player. Take the shots when the players are facing you. That is how to photograph sports.
There are features like focus lock on DSLR cameras. You can lock the focus on one face or object. Use that when shooting moving action. You also have the burst mode in all DSLR cameras. This will give you around 20 shots in a second. Use this mode to get the perfect pose or action.
Use the fastest setting on the shutter speed. Fast sports require fast shutter speeds. What you may think is fast enough may not be enough. So, set at a speed like 1/4000. If the game is played indoors set your ISO at high so that you get enough light at that shutter speed.
